Heavy metals

    By Beth Braverman

Fall fashion has arrived, and this year, that means a slimmed-down silhouette, dark colors, heavier fabrics and weighty, dramatic jewelry to accent it all.

In apparel, the ubiquitous dress continues its reign, but this season's frocks have a tighter fit and a primmer feel. As clothing gets heavier, jewelry will get weightier as well. Thick, luxe fabrics like velvet and brocade will re-emerge this autumn, providing the perfect palette for heavy gold chains and medallions. Small, personalized pendants continue to hold sway, though now they serve as accents to bolder pieces.

To see the season's dramatic jewelry, download Heavy metals.

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm SWD lens

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD lens : Olympus released, next to its new E-3 DSLR camera, three new Zuiko Digital lenses and a tele converter. Among them is the Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD lens. This 100% digital-specific optic incorporates Olympus’ new Supersonic Wave Drive technology, to provide ultra-fast, whisper-quiet auto focus (AF) speed, and offer several impressive distinctions. Two compact SWD devices power auto focus at a very high speed by exciting unique elliptical oscillations. The compact 5.3mm x 4.3mm optical encoder detects and controls the lens drive position using direct rotation detection without reduction gear. This enables it to achieve a level of precision that’s accurate to 5 microns.

Olympus Zuiko Digital 50-200mm SWD lens
John Knaur, senior marketing manager, Digital SLR, Olympus Imaging America Inc stated: "With the new SWD lenses, we’ve got outstanding glass to match the high quality performance of our flagship E-3 digital SLR. In testing, the 50-200mm SWD focused twice as fast as the previous Zuiko Digital lens with that focal length, which makes it an ideal lens for sports and action photography. This lens, in combination with the other introductions will fulfill many photographer’s focal length needs."

Olympus Zuiko super-telescopic zoom lens
The Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD is a high-performance super-telescopic zoom lens that features, for the first time, the SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive) Auto focus system and covers a zoom range equivalent to 100mm to 400mm of a 35mm camera lens. ED lens elements are being used extensively to correct color blurring which can occur when telescopic lenses are extended to their maximum focal length. The digital-dedicated design ensures high-definition performance with crisp and crystal clear images from edge to edge. In addition, close-up shooting is also superb, with a minimum shooting distance of just 1.2 meters throughout the zoom range.

Olympus Zuiko SWD Auto focus system
Auto focus is powered by Olympus’ newly designed SWD technology, which enables the lens to achieve an AF speed which is about 2x faster than the previous ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 model. As an ideal partner for the Olympus E-3 DSLR, this Zuiko lens maximizes the camera’s high-speed auto focus capability. The superior tracking capability makes the Zuiko Digital 50-200mm lens an ideal companion for sports photography and outdoor shooting applications.

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED f2.8-3.5 SWD
When using the Zuiko ED 50-200mm SWD lens in combination with the new Olympus E-3, which offers improved AF computation and lens-body communication rates, the SWD motors provide fast focusing speed of approximately 170 ms (0.17 seconds). The new Zuiko Digital SWD lens will be manufactured at the Olympus Tatsuno Plant in Japan, which is equipped with state-of-the-art production technology in the field of optical equipment. The Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD will be available in December 2007, at an estimated retail price of $1,199.99.

Zuiko 50-200mm SWD - Specifications
• Supersonic Wave Drive AF system: Ultra-fast AF speeds
• AF speeds are 2x faster than current 50-200mm lens
• 4x zoom
• 1.2m closest focusing distance
• Mechanical manual focusing
• Circular aperture diaphragm
• Lens hood with slide-window for PL filter
• Splashproof

Theron the new face of Breil Milano

Milan, Italy—Academy Award-winning actress Charlize Theron will be the new "it" girl for Italian luxury brand Breil Milano.

Images of the actress, glamorous in a black cocktail dress and cascading blonde curls, have already appeared as part of the brand's fall ad campaign, which was shot in Los Angeles in July and debuted in Italy on Oct. 7. It will also be running in the United States, Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, Holland and the United Kingdom. The estimated budget worldwide for 2007 is about $21.4 million, Binda Group, the brand's Milan, Italy-based parent company said in a press release.

Theron was chosen not only for her natural beauty, but for her "modern-woman personality," the company said.

"The actress represents a new type of woman, a mix of sensuality and determination, sophistication and down-to-earth attitude, elegance and simplicity," the company said in a release. "She will be in charge of personifying a new female target whom Breil Milano wants to speak to and help drive the brand's international expansion."

The brand, which is present in more than 40 countries, hopes to use Theron in efforts for further international expansion and the development of Breil Milano's high-end collections.

Under the terms of the multi-year contract, Theron is to star in all Breil Milano advertisements, including spots on television and cinema, print media and outdoor advertisements in various countries where the brand is marketed.

It's not the first jewelry-industry modeling stint for the South-African actress, who won an Academy Award in 2003 for her performance in the film Monster. She was previously featured in ads for Swiss watchmaker Raymond Weil, but the brand sued Theron earlier this year for breach of contract after she allegedly reneged on the terms of an endorsement deal by being photographed wearing a competing watch brand.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 Review at DP Review

DP Review has reviewed the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 and gives it a rating of 'above average'. They write - 'So then, the W80 is a camera that is capable of producing surprisingly good results in good light at ISO 100 and is perfectly usable at ISO 400-800 in low light if you don't want big prints (the church interiors in the samples gallery, for example, are better than I expected), but a camera that falls down in what I consider to be one of the most important areas for a camera such as this; pictures of people indoors in low light - with or without flash. If you're after a 'walk around' camera for scenery then it's not a bad buy for $200-ish, but if you actually have friends and family, and are still awake taking pictures after sunset it's hard to wholeheartedly recommend it when there are so many better alternatives out there.'

Scanning software Hamrick VueScan

Scanning software Hamrick VueScan : Hamrick Software has released its latest version 8.4.39 - containing more than 30 improvements since the last major release in February 2007 and support for 50 new scanners. VueScan has now been downloaded more than 5 million times. "When people use third party scanning software - they frequently have very specific needs. We listen very carefully to our customers, and as a result, release frequent upgrades to the product. Our customers expect very high standards, and it is important to meet their requirements as soon as possible. For example - we have immediately added support for two new scanners, the Epson V500 and Epson V200" says Ed Hamrick, President of Hamrick Software.
Ed Hamrick added: "Most recently, we have acquired many new customers as a result of supporting Vista. Many scanner drivers don't work on Windows Vista, but these scanners will usually work quite well with VueScan on Windows Vista. In fact, Hamrick VueScan provides higher quality scans and many more features than the software that comes with most scanners."

Scanning software
"We work closely with the major scanner manufacturers, as they realise that their own scanning software does not meet all their customer requirements. But hear them you will if you take Samsung's NV11 out to take pictures. Samsung's NV line certainly looks good, and the NV11 looks just as stylish as its siblings in the line. How do the images that come out of it compare to its flashy exterior?

Let's take a look.

The NV11 keeps the 10.1-megapixel output of its NV10 predecessor, with a new lens with extended zoom range and a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture.
Former President Clinton caught green-handed

New York—In a last-minute burst of inspiration, former President Bill Clinton took the stage last night at the VH1 Save the Music 10th Anniversary Gala sporting Simmons Jewelry Co.'s "Green Bracelet."

Simmons Jewelry Co. co-owner Russell Simmons saw the former president backstage at the event and seized the opportunity to tell him about the Diamond Empowerment Fund (DEF).

Simmons explained to Clinton that more than $20 of the profit from each Green Bracelet sold goes to the benefit of the DEF, the initiative founded by Simmons with the mission of giving back to Africa. Donations from the sale of the bracelet specifically support educational programs in African countries where diamonds are a natural resource.

According to a statement from Simmons Jewelry Co., Simmons said to Clinton, "I was officially dared by Simmons Jewelry President Scott Rauch to put this bracelet on your wrist before you go onstage. He promised me $25,000 to my charity if you do it."

After hearing the dare, Clinton reportedly grabbed the bracelet and stepped onstage, where he spoke on national television as an honoree of the evening.

Clinton's care for global issues shouldn't come as any surprise. In 2005, he founded the Clinton Global Initiative, which calls itself a non-partisan catalyst for action, bringing together global leaders to examine and implement solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges.

The initiative's 2007 annual meeting begins today in New York City. Over the course of three days, Clinton, along with current and former heads of state, top business executives, preeminent scholars and representatives of key non-governmental organizations, will concentrate on challenges and opportunities in four areas: education, energy and climate change, global health and poverty alleviation.
